The Locations
Bari, the capital of Puglia,is an intriguing town on the Adriatic famous for its authentic gastronomy, a wonderful seafront promenade and surprising historical centre with winding streets, a medieval castle and stunning Basilica. A wander through the old town would not be complete without watching the locals make orrechiette, the famous ear-shaped pasta. The Petruzzelli theatre is in the Murat quarter of the city, known for its elegant 19th-century buildings and palaces.
Martina Franca is one of the prettiest towns in Puglia, known for its Baroque architecture (Barocco Martinese) and opera festival. It is perched on a hilltop in the Valle d’Itria, a valley famous for olive oil production and trulli, cone-shaped dwellings which have come to symbolise Puglia. The town is also home to the Accademia del Belcanto “Rodolfo Celletti” which provides leading young opera singers with high education in the performance of Italian Bel Canto.
Lecce is a Baroque masterpiece featuring a staggering number of over 200 churches. Built in the local soft creamy limestone it offers stunning architectural surprises of historical richness and beauty. At the heart of the city is the Basilica di Santa Croce, one of the finest and most intricate Baroque facades in Italy with a masterful level of detail, having taken over 200 years to complete. The city offers a beautiful backdrop to a number of music festivals.
